Gum Disease (Pyorrhoea)

Signs & symptoms/how you come to know about your gum problem?
  • Bleeding from gums
  • Reddish and swollen gums
  • Foul smell from mouth
  • Plaque/calculus deposites on tooth
  • Mobility(shaking)of teeth
Why it happens?/Causes
  • Food particles remained uncleaned from tooth surface(lack of brushing teeth)
  • Gradual plaque formation and deposition, bacterial proliferation beneath that
  • Gradual infection occurs and gum irritation and inflammation takes place results in bleeding and swollen gums with gradual loss of underlying bone
Treatment
In Initial Stage
  • Through scaling and cleaning of all the teeth
  • Maintainance (as prescribed) at home
Misbelief Facts
1) Teeth may start shaking after scaling 1) In fact, teeth become more healthy and strong
2) Gums bleed more 2) Gums return to healthy state, gum strengthning occurs
3) Gaps occur in between teeth 3) Gaps already present due to loss of bone from that site which are filled by tarter deposites. When tarter is removed by scaling, you feel the real picture..The gap which was already occurred due to gum and bone loss.
In Severe Case
  • Gum surgery if needed
Laser Assisted Flap Surgery
  • The laser surgery is an effective procedure for improving overall dental health with less pain, less bleeding, less swelling, less tissue removal, and less recovery time than traditional gum surgery or periodontal treatment. You don't have to worry about bleeding, stitches or post-treatment infection, because your gums haven't been cut. You will also enjoy fewer follow-up visits and less time in the dentist chair.
  • The way to repair the damage from gum disease is to get rid of the infection and close up the infected pockets between the gum and teeth. LANAP is a minimally-invasive alternative to traditional gum surgery. It uses a digital dental laser to remove harmful bacteria and diseased tissue from the gum pocket by passing a laser light between the gum and tooth.
  • laser flap surgery is a single sitting painless, bloodless & stitchless procedure which is very comfortable to the patient as compared to the conventional periodontal flap surgeries.
  • Furthermore, immediately after the procedure patient won't be able to make out that some kind of dental surgeries have been done.

Procedure

  • Local anesthesia is given.
  • Incision is made & the flap of gums is opened.
  • Thorough scaling, polishing & root planning of teeth has been done.
  • All pockets & granulation tissues(damaged tissues) have been removed.
  • Irrigation & thorough cleaning of the area is finished.
  • Bone graft material is placed if needed.
  • Sutures are taken to place the opened gums back on the teeth & keep them in their positions.
  • Post surgical instructions & medicines are given.
ADVANTAGES OF LASER GUM TREATMENT
  • Painless ProcedureDecreased Sensitivity
  • Less procedure time
  • Less Post Treatment discomfort
  • Faster Healing
  • Biostimulation of tissues
  • Less Bleeding
  • No Sutures [stiches] required
  • No Cut or Reflection of soft tisuue
  • Less trauma [injury] to tisuue
  • Reduced risk of infection
Fiber splinting

Indication

  • Mobility of front teeth due to tarter deposition & periodontal bone loss
  • Mobility of teeth due to excessive trauma from occlusion

Procedure:

  • First , patient's bite adjustment is done in such a way that when patient closes his teeth, excessive force transmitting to the teeth can be eliminated.
  • Now fiber splint is applied on back surfaces of mobile teeth which need to be splinted.
  • The fiber splint is then stabilized with flowable composite resin material .so now, all these mobile teeth act as a bunch of tooth, bonded to each other, results in significant decrease in mobility of tooth.

Advantages:

  • Less mobility of teeth, more comfortable in cutting and chewing food then before.
  • Chewing forces transmitted to the underlying teeth can be limited,so as to reduce further bone loss and further mobility of teeth.

Note:

  • It can not create new bone so tooth it self can not be firm but splinting will help to reduce mobility of tooth practically.
  • Require proper cleaning and maintenance at the area, otherwise more plaque and calculus can develop, worsening the condition.
